The Issue

Our family is asking for compassion during an unimaginable time.

Our daughter, Ava, is courageously battling acute myeloid leukemia (AML), an aggressive form of childhood cancer. She has endured intensive chemotherapy, serious complications, and long hospital stays all within 17 days. Through it all, the one thing she asks for over and over is to see her dad.

Ava’s father is currently serving a nonviolent sentence with less than two months remaining. We are respectfully asking for compassionate release or a sentence modification so he can be by her side while she fights for her life.

Our family recently appeared in court to request compassionate relief, or sentence modification, but our request was denied. I (Ava’s mother) was not given the opportunity to speak on my daughter’s behalf or explain how deeply her father’s absence is affecting her during this critical time. We left feeling that Ava’s circumstances had not been fully heard or considered, which is why we are now asking our community to help amplify her voice through this petition.

This is not a request to excuse past mistakes. It is a plea for mercy in extraordinary circumstances. A little 7-yr old girl facing one of the hardest battles imaginable deserves the comfort, love, and support of both of her parents. Having her father present during this critical time would provide emotional strength that no one else can replace.

Medical research has consistently shown that emotional support from a parent can positively impact a child’s well-being while undergoing treatment for serious illnesses. While no one can promise an outcome for this cancer at this time,  we believe every child deserves the chance to face this battle surrounded by the people who love them most.

With less than two months left on his sentence, allowing Ava’s father to spend this time supporting his daughter would be an act of compassion and humanity that could make an immeasurable difference to Ava’s battle against AML Leukemia.

Please sign this petition and share it widely. Every signature is a request for compassion, mercy, and the chance for a father to be where he is needed most—beside his daughter as she fights for her life.
