Less Dress Code restrictions in New Brunswick Middle and High school institutions
The Issue
The following parts of dress-code that we disagree with are:
• Shorts and skirts of an appropriate length.
• Pants that are worn at the waist and do not expose too much of the lower
body.
• Upper bodies must be covered appropriately. (Implying stomachs and cleavage)
WHAT problems do the dress code cause?:
-The listed restrictions above diminishes freedom of expression and lowers school morale.
-Disrupting a student's school day for dress code takes away from their education.
-Can be costly to a student's body image/mental health.
-Promotes excuses for misogyny.
-Humiliation when a student is called out in front of their classmates by their teacher to "cover up" their body.
WHAT are the pros to the less restrictions on dress code?:
-Students will feel more heard and respected.
-More positive body image will be normalized.
-Some students will feel more comfortable on hot days.
WHAT parts of dress code should stay?:
• Slogans or clothing advertising
alcohol, drugs, profanity, sex,
violence, or gangs are not permitted.
• Clothing that may be used as a
weapon is not permitted. These may
include but are not limited to items
such as steel-toed boots (except for
within a shop environment) and some
studded clothing.
