Legalize throttles on Class 3 e-bikes up to 28 mph

Legalize throttles on Class 3 e-bikes up to 28 mph
The Issue
I believe that the current speed restriction of 20 mph for Class 2 e-bikes on throttle only is not just a nuisance but also a safety concern. Riding on roads where speed limits are 35-40 mph makes the 20 mph limit for e-bikes inadequate and potentially dangerous. where as Class 3 e-bikes can travel up to 28 mph but only with pedal assist. I think that ebikes with throttles that can go up to 28 mph should be recognized as a legal and reasonable option to enhance safety and mobility for e-bike users.
Class 3 e-bikes are an excellent alternative to traditional vehicles, offering an environmentally friendly mode of transportation that reduces carbon emissions, traffic congestion, and commuting costs. With 60% of vehicle trips being under six miles, e-bikes can serve as an efficient solution to urban transportation challenges. However, limiting these bikes to 20 mph on throttle only operation decreases their viability to smoothly integrate with existing traffic conditions, especially on roads with higher speed limits.
Studies show that maintaining a traffic speed that is closer to surrounding vehicles can lead to a decrease in road accidents. Class 3 e-bikes, with their capacity to reach 28 mph, align more closely with vehicular speeds, allowing for safer merging, overtaking, and lane changing compared to being restricted to 20 mph.
Moreover, faster e-bikes have shown a potential for increased adoption, thus further promoting sustainable transportation options. By legalizing Class 3 e-bikes that can reach speeds of up to 28 mph on throttle only, we not only boost commuter flexibility but also contribute to more robust e-bike sales and infrastructure development.
I urge lawmakers to reconsider the illogical cap on e-bike speeds and acknowledge the importance of a safer, more adaptable urban environment that encourages the use of e-bikes. With the proper regulatory framework, we can ensure a safe and thriving e-bike culture in our community.
Please join me in advocating for the legalization of Class 3 e-bikes going up to 28 mph on throttle only a lawful and standardized speed limit. Sign this petition to make our roads safer and our commutes more efficient.
