Legalize the Use of ATV and UTV on Southport Town Roads

The Issue

As a resident of Southport, NY, my family and I have long enjoyed the outdoor activities that our beautiful town has to offer. From hunting and fishing to going on a fun ride, these experiences are integral to our way of life. However, we believe that these experiences could be enhanced by allowing the use of All-Terrain Vehicles (ATV) and Utility Task Vehicles (UTV) on town roads.

Currently, local laws prohibit us from using these vehicles on public roads. This restriction not only limits our ability to fully enjoy what nature has to offer but also hampers quick access for hunting or fishing trips.

According to a study by the National Off-Highway Vehicle Conservation Council (NOHVCC), states that allow ATVs and UTVs on public roads have not seen significant increases in traffic accidents involving these vehicles. This suggests that with proper regulations and safety measures in place, it is possible for motorized vehicles like ATVs and UTVs to coexist with other road users without compromising safety.

We urge the Town Board of Southport to consider passing a local law permitting ATV and UTV use on town roads under regulated conditions. By doing so, you will enhance recreational opportunities for residents while still maintaining road safety standards.

Please sign this petition if you support more outdoor recreational freedom in Southport!
