Legalize Safe Lane Filtering for Motorcycles in Alberta

Legalize Safe Lane Filtering for Motorcycles in Alberta
The Issue
Every day, while traveling through Alberta's bustling streets, I witness motorcycles stuck in traffic, caught in the same gridlock as cars, trucks, and buses. What strikes me as illogical is that these smaller, more agile vehicles, which are already more vulnerable on the road, are not legally allowed to practice lane filtering, a maneuver that could significantly enhance their safety and help ease traffic congestion.
Lane filtering, or the practice of riding a motorcycle between lanes during slow-moving/stopped traffic, is already legal and effective in various regions worldwide, including California in the United States and parts of Europe and Asia. Studies have shown that when executed safely, lane filtering reduces the likelihood of rear end collisions, one of the most common and dangerous types of motorcycle accidents. In fact, a study conducted by the University of California, Berkeley, found that lane filtering motorcyclists were less likely to be hit from behind than those who were stuck in traffic.
In addition to improving rider safety, legalizing lane filtering can also benefit Alberta's overall traffic flow. By allowing motorcycles to move freely between lanes, we can reduce the overall number of vehicles taking up space in congested lanes, leading to quicker travel times for everyone on the road. Furthermore, this practice can decrease emissions from idling vehicles, contributing positively to the environment and aligning with Alberta's commitment to sustainable practices.
Implementing safe lane filtering requires the establishment of clear guidelines and public awareness campaigns to ensure that all road users understand the rules and place an emphasis on safety. This law change would include setting speed limits while lane filtering and educating both motorcyclists and drivers to recognize and safely accommodate lane filtering motorcycles.
By supporting this petition, you are advocating for a practice that will enhance safety and efficiency for all road users in Alberta. Let's urge Alberta Transportation to consider the benefits of lane filtering and move towards legalization with the right guidelines to make our roads safer and more efficient. Sign this petition to demand change and promote safer roadways for everyone in our province.
