Legalize Psilocybin to Address Mental Health Issues and Prevent Suicides 250,000 names
The Issue
I write this petition as someone who has walked in the shoes of those I am advocating for. Having lived with mental health issues, I understand the urgent need for effective treatments. It is my conviction, backed by substantial scientific evidence, that psilocybin, the active ingredient in 'magic mushrooms', is a long-overlooked solution.
For the past 50 years, scientists have understood the psychoactive potential of psilocybin. In clinical trials, it has shown promise in treating a range of psychiatric disorders, including depression, addiction, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Despite these benefits, psilocybin remains illegal under federal law.
Our refusal to recognize psilocybin's potential isn't just stubborn, it's dangerous. Each day, approximately 20 veterans end their lives due to untreated mental health issues, as per the report from the Department of Veteran Affairs. Our first responders, too, face an increased rate of suicide compared to the general population. This is an avoidable tragedy, one that psilocybin could help to mitigate if only we would allow it.
By maintaining psilocybin's status as an illegal substance, we are not just ignoring its therapeutic potential; we are directly contributing to the mental health crisis among our most vulnerable citizens. I urge Congress to reassess the legality of psilocybin and consider the benefits it can bring to millions of citizens. Our veterans and first responders, and all those silently suffering from mental illnesses, deserve every chance at recovery. Please sign this petition and help us bring about the change we sorely need. Our goal is to reach at least 250,000 signature.
Getting this medicine approved is critically important, but many are not well informed about its benefits and necessity. To ease any concerns, we suggest initially offering this treatment in a dedicated facility, which needn't be a hospital, but at the minimum, an approved facility agreed upon between the people. The ultimate goal is to make this treatment easily accessible for everyone, ideally in the comfort of their own homes.
