The Issue

As of writing this October 17th, 2023, I am 6 months, 16 days, 13 hours and 47 minutes sober from alcohol…. 200 days…. My life was once consumed by the darkness of depression and alcohol addiction. With the legalization of hemp from the 2018 Farm Bill, I’ve been able to have access to a therapeutic solution for my mental health and have benefited tremendously from it’s use. However, I have found an additional beacon of hope in an unexpected place - psilocybin mushrooms. This natural substance has not only helped me to regain control over my life but also offered me a fresh perspective on existence. Now, I stand before you as a living testament to the potential benefits of psilocybin, urging you to reconsider its legal status in North Carolina.

Psilocybin has shown promising results in scientific research for treating depression. A study conducted by Johns Hopkins Medicine revealed that two doses of psilocybin, combined with supportive psychotherapy, produced rapid and large reductions in depressive symptoms among adults with major depression. Furthermore, according to the Global Drug Survey 2017, magic mushrooms are one of the safest recreational drugs.

Despite these findings, our laws continue to criminalize this potentially life-saving substance instead of harnessing its therapeutic potential. The current classification under Schedule I not only restricts access for those who could benefit from it but also hampers further research into its medicinal properties.

By decriminalizing psilocybin mushrooms and allowing their use for treating depression under medical supervision, we can open new avenues for mental health treatment while reducing unnecessary criminal charges related to their possession or use.

Let's break free from outdated perspectives and embrace science-backed solutions that can improve lives like mine and others who could potentially benefit from alternative medicines.
