Legalize Personal Marijuana Use for Boat Captains During Off-Duty Hours

The Issue

I believe in the therapeutic benefits of marijuana. It's less dangerous than alcohol and can provide relief from the physical and mental stress that comes life. However, current regulations prevent boat captains from using it even during off-duty hours.

In Juneau, AK, marijuana is legal for recreational use by adults over 21 years old. Yet boat captains are denied this right due to outdated maritime laws that do not reflect modern understanding of marijuana's effects or its legal status in Alaska.

Studies have shown that marijuana is far less harmful than alcohol - a substance which is legally consumed by millions of Americans every day (Source: National Academy of Sciences). Furthermore, there is growing evidence supporting the medicinal benefits of cannabis for conditions such as chronic pain and anxiety (Source: Harvard Medical School), conditions often experienced by those in demanding professions such as captaining.

We ask for fairness and understanding. We're not advocating for impaired operation of vessels; rather we seek to allow captains to enjoy the same rights as other Alaskans when off duty. We urge lawmakers to update maritime regulations to allow boat captains to use marijuana recreationally during their personal time without fear of losing their livelihoods which in many cases support families.

Please sign this petition if you believe in equal rights under law and support updating these outdated regulations.
