Legalize pepper spray for self-defence in Australia

Legalize pepper spray for self-defence in Australia
The issue
We believe that every Australian has the fundamental right to feel safe in public spaces, on public transport, in car parks, and in their own neighbourhood. But the unfortunate reality is that many people, particularly women, feel vulnerable and unsafe. In 2022 alone, statistics showed an increase in reports of physical assaults and threatening behaviour in public areas across the country.
Pepper spray is a non-lethal personal safety device that has proven effective in deterring potential attacks. It's already legal in several countries around the world, including the United States, Canada, and many parts of Europe, offering individuals a valuable tool for self-defence.
However, in Australia, carrying pepper spray is still illegal, (except in WA) denying law-abiding citizens a means to protect themselves. We've seen a rise in discussions around personal safety, yet there has been little legislative movement to empower Australians with non-lethal self-defence options.
Legalising pepper spray would not replace police efforts but rather complement them, giving individuals a way to protect themselves while reducing the risk of serious harm. Women, who are often disproportionately targeted in public spaces, would especially benefit from having pepper spray as a protective tool. The legalisation of pepper spray would send a clear message: Australia prioritises the safety and security of its citizens.
We urge the Australian government to reconsider the current legislation and make pepper spray legally available for the purpose of self-defence. It is time to take action and ensure that everyone in Australia can feel secure and empowered.
Please sign this petition to support the legalisation of pepper spray for self-defence, and make our public spaces safer for everyone.
🔹 Why Pepper Spray Should Be Legal
✔ Non-lethal and temporary
Pepper spray incapacitates an attacker without causing permanent harm.
✔ Proven internationally
Countries with legal civilian pepper spray have not experienced increased violence because of it.
✔ A life-saving option for vulnerable Australians
Women walking alone, shift workers, seniors, people in isolated areas — all deserve access to basic, non-lethal defence.
✔ Police cannot be everywhere
Pepper spray provides seconds of protection while help arrives.
Pepper spray is legal for civilians in:
🇺🇸 United States
🇨🇦 Canada
🇬🇧 United Kingdom
