I am a motorcyclist who moved from a country where motorcycle lane filtering is legal to Ontario, Canada, where it remains prohibited. This has not only been a significant adjustment but also a concern for personal safety. Lane filtering, not splitting, allow motorcyclists to pass slow or stationary vehicles within the same lane, a practice commonly followed in many countries across the world. In those places, filtering has shown to decrease the risk of riders being rear-ended, significantly lowering the rate of injury. Moreover, Transport and Road Research Laboratory (TRRL) in the UK affirms that the practice of lane filtering contributes to reducing traffic congestion overall. So, it not only benefits riders but also other road users. It's high time Ontario follows suit and reassess the ban on motorcycle lane filtering. We urge the local transport authorities in Ontario to consider the safety and congestion benefits, paralleled in many other countries, and legalize lane filtering as a legal and safe driving practice for motorcyclists.
