Legalize Medical Marijuana Federally to Allow Patients to Travel with Their Medication

The Issue

I am a person living with a chronic nerve pain condition called complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). This rare condition causes severe pain and other serious symptoms. To manage my condition, I use a topical medical marijuana cream in addition to other prescription medications. Medical marijuana has been instrumental in helping me manage my symptoms, but current laws prevent me from traveling with it.

Patients like myself are effectively trapped within our home states due to the federal illegality of medical marijuana. We cannot board an airplane or cross state lines carrying any form of this crucial medication, whether it be tinctures or topical creams. This restriction severely limits our freedom and quality of life.

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, as of 2020, 36 states have approved the use of medical marijuana for conditions like CRPS (source: NCSL). Despite this widespread acceptance at the state level, federal law has not caught up.

According to the CDC, approximately 50 million people in the U.S. are living with chronic pain. (Approximately 20% of the population!)  The Marijuana Policy Project (MPP) reports that 3,866,746 people + are medical cannabis patients (in states that permit MMJ.)

It's time for change. We need federal legislation that recognizes the medicinal value of cannabis and allows patients who rely on it for treatment to travel freely within their own country without fear of legal repercussions.

Please sign this petition urging lawmakers to legalize medical marijuana federally so that patients can travel with their medication without fear or hindrance.

Please consider contacting your lawmakers directly about this issue.

Thank you.
