The Issue

Motorcycle lane splitting—riding between lanes of stopped or slow-moving traffic—has been legalized in California and proven to improve safety and reduce congestion. Studies show fewer injuries, fatalities, and rear-end collisions where lane splitting is allowed. It's time Ontario adopted this proven safety and traffic measure.

We, the undersigned, call on the Government of Ontario to legalize and regulate lane splitting for motorcycles on Ontario roads and highways.

Why now?

California legalized lane splitting in 2016 and saw measurable safety improvements.

Utah reported a 61.1% decrease in motorcycle fatalities after introducing lane filtering.

U.S. data shows California had 30% fewer rear-end motorcycle fatalities compared to Texas and Florida.

Benefits for Ontario:

Fewer crashes and rider injuries.

Reduced traffic congestion.

Improved rider safety in hot and stop-and-go conditions.

Ontario must update its outdated laws and empower riders with safe, modern practices.

We urge the Ontario Ministry of Transportation to:

1. Legalize lane splitting under defined safety conditions.

2. Consult with rider advocacy groups, safety experts, and law enforcement.

3. Launch public education campaigns for awareness.

Add your name and help bring safer, more efficient roads to Ontario and minimize the financial burden that responding to collisions creates for the Province of Ontario.
