The Issue

As a resident of Maumee, Ohio, the steep climb in grocery prices has significantly affected my family and others within our community. I believe that allowing backyard chickens in our city would provide a sustainable supplement of eggs for many households and lessen the financial burden we are currently experiencing.

The current economic climate has left thousands in our city with a need to seek alternative yet sustainable ways to meet their dietary needs. In the United States alone, about 13 million households keep chickens, with the figure expected to continue rising in light of economic uncertainties (The Guardian, 2021). Chickens not only provide eggs but also help in managing garden pests and producing compostable waste for healthier soils (National Geographic, 2020).

Yet, in Maumee, we are denied such privileges due to outdated laws that categorize backyard chickens as livestock and thus consider them unfit for urban areas. Cities across the United States, including New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, have reformed their stand by allowing regulated chicken farming (Business Insider, 2019).

Our city has the opportunity to follow in these footsteps by loosening its legislative grip on urban farming within the city limits. Let's embrace backyard chickens as a viable answer to rising food costs and push towards self-sustainability for every Maumee resident.

Sign the petition and help us get the council's attention. Together we can make Maumee friendlier for families and chickens alike!
