The Issue

My husband, a brave and resilient disabled veteran, along with our precious child who also faces the daily challenges of a disability, are the heart and soul of our family. Our backyard chickens are not just birds to us; they are a vital part of our lives, providing fresh eggs which sustain our family and offer some comfort and encouragement amidst the difficulties we face.

For many families like ours in Virginia Beach, chickens and roosters serve more than the occasional breakfast. They represent a source of nourishment, interaction, and emotional support that is profoundly healing in our unique situations. They also foster neighborhood bonds, as we share the eggs and joy they produce with our local community.

Unfortunately, current regulations in Virginia Beach prohibit keeping chickens and roosters in residential areas, depriving many families of these benefits. This prohibition creates unnecessary hardship, especially for those who rely on these birds for food security and companionship.

Rearing backyard chickens and roosters has been shown to have minimal negative impact on the environment or neighboring properties. Research and statistics show that urban poultry keeping significantly aids in waste reduction, improves household food resilience, and has positive psychological effects. Many cities have successfully implemented policies permitting backyard poultry, balancing community concerns with personal freedoms.

We propose that the Virginia Beach City Council considers changing the local ordinance to allow backyard chickens and roosters. To ensure a harmonious coexistence between poultry keepers and other residents, regulations can be introduced regarding the number of birds, coop requirements, and noise control.

By signing this petition, you will help us encourage the City Council to take meaningful steps towards allowing families like mine the opportunity to thrive, enriched by the simple yet profound joy of keeping our beloved chickens and roosters. Your support can make a tangible difference. Please sign to help us advocate for a more inclusive and resilient Virginia Beach community.
