For five years, I and many others have responsibly owned chickens in our backyards here in Bargersville, IN. These chickens provide fresh eggs for our families and serve as cherished pets. However, a recent change in the town ordinance has banned backyard chicken ownership.

This ban not only disrupts our way of life but also undermines the sustainable practices that backyard chicken ownership promotes. According to the U.S Department of Agriculture (USDA), home-raised chickens produce healthier eggs compared to store-bought ones. They also contribute to reducing food waste as they can consume kitchen scraps.

Moreover, according to a study by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), raising backyard poultry is an educational opportunity for children about food sources and animal care.

We are not asking for unrestricted rights but rather reasonable regulations that allow responsible chicken owners to continue their practice within city limits. We urge Bargersville's local government officials to reconsider this ban and work with us towards a solution that benefits everyone involved.
