Legalise public removal of abandoned crab pots
The issue
During a recent dive, I was devastated to find a majestic sea turtle entangled and lifeless inside an abandoned crab pot. This heartbreaking encounter exposed me to a distressing reality beneath our waters. These orphaned traps, often described as ghost pots, haunt our marine environments by constantly trapping and killing sea life indiscriminately. However, under current regulations, it remains illegal for the public to intervene and remove these hazards—a restriction that urgently needs to be reconsidered.
Ghost pots plague our coastlines, particularly in regions abundant in marine biodiversity such as Moreton Bay, the Sunshine Coast and Wide Bay. Without identifying floats or markings, they are invisible enemies in the waters, continuously destroying precious marine ecosystems. Ghots pots ensare and kill an untold number of crabs, fish, turtles, and even marine mammals each year. These casualties occur due to the simplicity of capture—once an animal is trapped, its struggle attracts more animals, perpetuating a deadly cycle.
Despite the clear ecological threat, regulatory measures fail to empower those best positioned to mitigate this damage: the public. Experienced fishermen, responsible divers, and engaged citizens who encounter these snares should be legally enabled to remove them. We are calling for legislative action that permits and encourages the safe extraction of ghost pots to protect vulnerable marine species.
We cannot allow bureaucratic red tape to maintain a stranglehold over ocean preservation efforts. The cost of delay is measured in lost marine lives. It is incumbent upon us to advocate for a change that allows us to directly contribute to the health of our waters. Legalizing public intervention is not just a plea—it's an ethical imperative.
I call on government officials, environmental organizations, and concerned citizens to join me in demanding the amendment of current laws. Let us empower our communities to act as stewards of the oceans and safeguard our marine life from the silent menace of ghost pots. Sign this petition to make our waters safer and more sustainable for all living creatures.
