Legalise fireworks in ACT

Legalise fireworks in ACT
The issue
Growing up, some of my fondest memories revolved around the vibrant skies illuminated by colourful fireworks. These cherished moments were not merely about the spectacular displays; they were about family gatherings, communal celebrations, and the shared feelings of awe and joy. Fireworks brought exhilaration and a sense of community during occasions that marked milestones in our lives.
However, in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), the current ban on fireworks limits these expressions of celebration and shared experiences. The tradition of using fireworks for personal and communal celebrations has been significantly restricted, taking away a fundamental part of our cultural and festive practices.
The prohibition may have been enacted to ensure public safety, but with proper regulation and safety measures, we can enjoy fireworks responsibly. Many regions worldwide manage firework displays with stringent guidelines that ensure safety while maintaining the festive spirit. Implementing similar regulations in ACT can create a balance between safety and the enjoyment of fireworks.
Research and statistics suggest that regulated firework usage can significantly reduce potential harm. According to a report from the National Fire Protection Association, controlled fireworks have a lower incidence rate of injuries compared to unregulated ones. Furthermore, educational campaigns on safe handling can aid in reducing risks further.
Moreover, local businesses would benefit economically from the sale and controlled usage of fireworks, creating jobs and boosting the local economy during peak festive seasons. Licensing trained vendors to sell fireworks can also ensure that quality standards are met, further safeguarding the community.
By legalising and regulating the use of fireworks in ACT, we can revive the cultural practices that foster joy, community spirit, and heritage celebrations while ensuring public safety. The community deserves the opportunity to reclaim these moments of joy, and through responsible regulation, I believe we can achieve this for everyone in ACT.
Join me in advocating for the legalisation of fireworks in the ACT by signing this petition and bringing back the joyful memories and traditions that fireworks embody.
