Im a student at Cape Coral High School, and I have fallen foul of the Lee County School District's dress code rules. This dress code prohibits us from wearing hats or beanies — a restriction I've found both frustrating and unfair, especially when weather conditions necessitate such items. The school often confiscates these items, despite the punishment section of its own student code of conduct not mentioning this prerogative. 

This issue is more pervasive than just my personal experience — it affects over 94,000 students in the Lee County School District. Our district's extreme state of Florida climate makes such restrictive rules seem illogical, not to mention feeling oppressive towards us students who simply need to protect ourselves from the elements.

The rules are even more confusing when considering that the National Association of State Boards of Education encourages school districts to create policies that reflect community norms, and wearing hats and beanies are normal behaviors in response to weather conditions. Yet, our school district chooses a contradicting approach.

Without a clear reason behind the prohibition of hats and beanies, students like myself feel unfairly targeted and subjected to a rule that seemingly only serves to inhibit our comfort.

I urge you to support this petition to express our disagreement with the dress code and propose its revision.
