To protect children from the negative impacts of traffic and provide them a safe environment to travel to and from school, a school speed zone should be implemented in front of the school to decrease the speed limit during school start and dismissal times.  

Currently there are no speed restrictions on Gunnery Rd N at Tortuga Elementary School.  This poses a danger to not only students walking or bike riding to and from school, but to all vehicles and buses entering and exiting the school.  During these peak hours, traffic backs up onto Gunnery Rd N from the school in both directions, impairing the site of drivers entering and exiting the school as other vehicles speed down Gunnery Rd at an excess of 45mph.  Lowering the speed limit during these times will help with traffic flow and decrease the potential of accidents. 

Our number one priority should always be to protect our children and their families.
