Megan’s Law is Evil

Megan’s Law is Evil
The Issue
The original intent of Megan’s Law, to protect children and families from RSO’s, over the past 25 years, has proven counterproductive. It’s a never ending punishment to those who’ve already served their time. No other category of crime requires this.
As a president who believes in second chances for redemption and Criminal Justice Reform, I think it’s about time the registry gets factored in, as well! Why should those convicted of sex crimes continuously be singled out?
All Americans deserve Fair, unbiased representation. Megan’s law/SORNA law, violates the rights, based on false assumptions that are fueled by ignorance and fear. The policies unfairly target, the non-violent offenders, in particular, while they’re just as worthy of redemption.
But, life post-release for RSO’s is nearly impossible, because of the substantial barriers they endure, which increases recidivism, not for another sex crime. Technical violations land them back in prison. As our president, who wants to put an end to mass incarceration, the registry only adds more fuel to the fire.
Conversely, it’s understandable that the violent sexual predators should be treated, accordingly! Perhaps given lengthier sentences, if they’re deemed a threat to society. The low-risk offenders and children should be removed from the registry. There are sadly innocent people on the registry, too, i.e, false allegations or under-aged teens who lied about their age, the kid who needed to urinate behind a tree because of a full bladder or two consenting teens. Some of these crimes, not in any way, involved a child. Yet, these individuals have the misfortune of being subjected to the same draconian laws as the “worst of the worst.” Residence restrictions rendering many homeless and unemployed. As our president, who wants to put an end to the homelessness crisis, again, the registry needs to be factored in. No one deserves a lifetime punishment after repentance nor any law should be retroactive.
The registry harms registrants, their families, loved ones and their children. Ask yourself; When vigilantes destroy the RSO’s families property or harass them, how does that protect children? When homeless RSO’s are harder to track, how does that protect children? If the RSO is a parent, how does that protect the child who’s an easy target to ostracism or bullying? What about children on the registry? They’re, especially, in grave danger. They’re lives haven’t even started, yet doomed indefinitely! No first job, no first date, no chance of being accepted into college. They may be expelled from the school they currently attend. Even more catastrophic, if they have under-age siblings they’re ripped apart from their homes and into the foster care system. Suppose, no one wants to adopt a child RSO? Then what??? If they can’t be around places where other children congregate, then they’re robbed of their childhood. This leads to isolation, depression and a greater risk of suicide. Tragically, many succeeded.
As long as this registry remains active, more lives will be destroyed. No one has any mercy for RSO’s, whether they’re adults, children, healthy or disabled! What about your goal in getting as many Americans vaccinated, as soon as possible?? As the incarcerated and homeless population are more vulnerable to the COVID-19 infection and lack access to the vaccines, the hopes of reaching herd immunity could also be challenging. Something to think about!!! Moreover, RSO’s are shut out of gov’t assistance programs, like health care, SNAP and affordable housing. They’re not welcomed into homeless shelters. That also goes for emergency shelters, in the case, when Hurricane Irma hit Florida, a few years back. Since families and children are present at these shelters, RSO’s were either left to fend for themselves or be temporarily housed in the nearest county jails, until the storm passed. Stray cats even get rescued from the storm. This goes to show that RSO’s are treated worse than animals. They’re already living in squalor, without running water nor access to toilets. Personal hygiene is a challenge. Malnutrition and serious diseases result from homelessness.
It’s tragic and non-violent RSO’s are continuously living under these inhumane conditions. They’re not only given life sentences but also the potential of a death sentence! That could result from either natural causes, suicide or get killed by vigilantes. One got shot in the face just because he’s on the registry.
This registry is a grave injustice, as there are too many individuals who shouldn’t be on it. It needs to be abolished. It’s not a one-size-fits-all!
This law is a waste of law enforcement’s time, which should be focused on the real violent criminals!! This law is costly, not only to human lives, but also billions of dollars of tax payers money wasted. This money could be better invested towards educational and rehabilitation programs for safer communities. Keep only the most violent predators locked up, if necessary!
Megan’s Law is outdated and liken to the laws from the mid-evil days, such as how the Nazi’s treated the Jewish. Stop these “Witch Hunts” and this “New Jim Crow Law!” In essence, sex crimes are the “new” hate crimes.
I urge lawmakers to open up your hearts and try to understand that RSO’s are human beings. Please have some sympathy for those who committed the non-violent offenses and not give up on our children!! Stop this law!!!
Sincerely,
Tracy Sullivan
