Lavender Heights Security
The Issue
In the past 11 months Lavender Heights in District 4 has experienced an alarming increase in violence. Along the 20th Street corridor, spanning five blocks, there have been three reported attacks against gay males, resulting in 1 tragic death, 1 arrest, and countless silent victims who are afraid to come forward. This surge in hate-fueled violence is alarming and needs immediate attention from our city leaders.
Lavender Heights is renowned for its vibrant LGBTQ+ community. It's a place where thousands come to enjoy nightlife, camaraderie, and acceptance without fear. Yet, as night falls on Fridays and Saturdays, safety becomes a serious concern for LGBTQIA+ community, residents, businesses and visitors alike. The presence of a dedicated police patrol between 9 PM and 2 AM on these nights would significantly deter potential hate crimes, speeding, drunk driving and protect our community members, restaurants, dance clubs, comedy clubs, beer gardens, coffeehouses and retail merchants.
The Sacramento Police Department must take urgent action by deploying officers to patrol Lavender Heights during peak hours. Neighboring districts with high foot traffic have shown decreases in crime rates with such measures in place. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, visible police presence is one of the most effective means of reducing crime in periods of high activity.
Moreover, these patrols should be equipped with training to handle situations specific to LGBTQ+ hate crimes. Many of our residents fear that their voices are lost, not only due to a lack of presence but also due to a perceived lack of understanding and support from law enforcement.
We demand the city of Sacramento, the Sacramento Police Department, and the Mayor’s Office to take decisive action to ensure Lavender Heights remains a safe haven for the LGBTQ+ community and allies. Increasing police patrols will not only help prevent further attacks but will also reassure our community that their safety is a priority.
Join us in demanding protection and visibility for Lavender Heights and its community. Please sign this petition to call upon our city leaders to act now.
