When I came home Monday evening, a reporter from a local Fox News station was waiting to interview me about Zap and did a piece on the News at 9 pm. Although I told the reporter that the main reason we oppose Zap being caged is that rabbits should be able to roam outside the cage 30 hours a week, unfortunately, that point was not mentioned due to time constraint. House Rabbit Society recommends that rabbits be allowed to roam 30-40 hours a week. Bunnies hop! How are they supposed to hop if they are in a cage 24/7?
In the video below, the owner claims that she is following breeders' standards by keeping him in a wire bottom cage with a piece of hard plastic and barely any hays. People need to understand that it’s not about following breeders standards because those are people raising rabbits for profit, it’s about the quality of life for an animal considered a pet and not livestock. Spending your whole life alone in a cage is no quality or standard of living when they are naturally prone to range far from their nests & are social animals. All animals deserve to get exercise, to play, to interact, and to receive attention. Not to mention how wire is bad for their feet, the discomfort involved, it’s a sad life for such intelligent & lively little creatures. They can express so much joy! Breeders standards ain't gonna cut it for pet rabbits to live in a cage 2+ years!
The video attached shows that everything I have been saying is true! If you think that it is not abused to keep a bunny in a cage 24/7 so people can come in, open the cage door and pet his head a couple of times then we disagree! Just because their customers like him is no reason to keep him locked up. People like animals in the circus too but that does not mean they are not abused. During the more than 3 weeks that I was in the store visiting Zap, I only saw 3 groups of customers petting him and 2 out of 3 were because they feel sorry for him being caged all the time!
The fact that they removed Zap from the store will not stop us from trying to free him! We will not let up until we know Zap is in a loving home or even surrendered to a shelter so he can be adopted to a loving home where he can roam free and be treated with dignity!
Our plan now is to have a letter writing campaign and keep sharing this petition to get more people on board! Locally, we will keep up the pressure by handing out flyers to surrounding businesses! We will have sample letters soon and will post it as updates.
If you do write the letter, please keep it civil and do not say anything that could be perceived as a threat or illegal acts. We want to show that we are a strong, passionate and resilient group of animal lovers caring for Zap's welfare, not nasty or uncivil!
The store is Walker's Quality Cage and Feed at 4298 Kipling St., Suite A, Wheat Ridge, CO 80033.
Thank you all so very much for your continued support of Zap and keep sharing this petition.
