Launching of "Always carry your Waste Bag" campaign across India

The Issue

I write this petition as a concerned citizen of India, deeply troubled by the littering here and there, mounted heaps of waste in every nook and corner of cities leaving even most efficient of sweepers baffled next morning. Whatever even the most efficient ones are not able to clean finds ways into pockets from where it will never come out.

In Hills, it's swept down the slopes of valley, getting struck there for years and in plains it is swept aside in to Gutters and drains of cities and then finding its way to Nallahs and rivers, making problem of water pollution, soil pollution even worse. I am scared by the eventualities if this continues like this.  Less waste is removed from roads every day than what is dropped on them. May be, much of the public money also won't be able to clean the drains or hill slopes if the rate at which they are getting choked continues.

It's high time we put a stop to this as society, as prevention is only cure here.

India's Swachh Bharat mission has seen success, with the World Bank reporting that 96% of the population now has access to a toilet. It has ushered in the basic aspirations among citizens to have neat and clean India, but no matter where you go people can still easily be seen throwing garbage in public places.

The cleanliness of our cities and villages is becoming only worse after every passing day.

Is there a solution? Yes there is. Does it require lot of resources? No it does not. Lets find a solution to it.

If we closely observe the behavior of people, we find even educated ones may be seen doing the same. So university education is also not going to solve it.

But there is one more contrasting observation here which leads us to solution.

If we go to the house of even a poor family with very limited resources any where in India, we find houses to be perfectly clean. Unlike other societies, we as individuals are excellent in personal hygiene but as a society we are somewhere failing in public hygiene, in keeping our public places neat and clean.

This is what gives us a silver lining of hope and a solution.

I am a firm believer that each and every of our citizen wants to see his/her country as clean as cities of any developed nation.

But somewhere we as society are struck. If we closely probe this gap we find that people really don't know what to do with that empty packet of Chips or empty bottle of water or the peels of banana after they have eaten it. Even if they don't want to throw it on roads, they don't know what to do about it when dustbins are not visible. Dustbins are not nearby and they can't keep it with themselves also, so they simply throw it.

This is where a simple solution can work. If citizens develop the habit of carrying a waste bag inside their main bag, they can always keep such  trash in it and throw it as soon as see a dustbins. Number of Pubic waste bins surely can be put in more numbers.

We just need to run a campaign to motivate citizens to always carry a waste bag when they stepping out of homes. This waste bag can be as small as one which can be kept in pocket if a person is just not carrying any other bag.

When I went to Europe i saw people there keeping a small waste Bag inside their main bag and whatever they ate or drank, the empty packet or bottle or even the wrapper of toffee was kept by them in that waste Bag. They clear the waste Bag as soon as they see a dustbin.

We just need to follow this practice. However the awareness to always carry waste bag needs to be created.

It so easier for people moving on vehicles. Even for pedestrians its simple and easy. Ladies always carry a purse or a hand bag and this waste bag can be always kept inside their purse/handbag.

This simple solution if given popularity and followed by citizens can save our nation from never ending problem of unhygienic public places.

Surely, some innovative ways are to be found to spread this awareness. Attractive slogans need to be built around the idea. Celebrities need to endorse this. I hope they would do it for free.

People carrying waste bags, no matter how small the bag is, are to be shown as heroes of society.

Campaign is to be designed wherein every proud citizen carries a waste bag and keeps his waste with himself or herself and never throws it in public places, except into dustbins.

We just need to give this small and simple solution to society and I am sure people will respond.

I urge Government of India to launch this campaign as a part of already running Swachh Bharat Mission and run it through various agencies. Let's hire influencers,  celebrities to motivate people to carry their waste bags and make India as clean as any developed nation.

By signing this petition, each one of us is pledging our commitment to a clean India and is urging our Central and State governments to run this campaign. Stand with us in this fight against littering and unhygienic public places. Express your support for a cleaner, healthier, and more beautiful India, our India. Please sign and share this petition.
