Landlocked, Not Left Out: Uganda Must Join the High Seas Treaty.

Landlocked, Not Left Out: Uganda Must Join the High Seas Treaty.
The Issue
Growing up and studying in a place where environmental issues are often felt more than discussed, I have seen firsthand how pollution and climate change affect communities directly particularly our access to clean water and healthy ecosystems. Even though Uganda is a landlocked country, our lives remain intricately connected to the global environmental systems. This realization has profoundly emphasized the importance of not staying silent on global issues like ocean protection. This campaign is personal to me because I firmly believe that our voices matter and can effect change.
The High Seas Treaty is a landmark agreement aimed at safeguarding international waters, approximately two-thirds of the world's oceans, for future generations. It seeks to protect marine biodiversity, regulate resource exploitation, and ensure sustainable use governing the high seas. While many nations have stepped forward, Uganda has yet to sign and ratify this crucial treaty.
By not participating in the High Seas Treaty, Uganda risks missing an opportunity to stand with the international community in global environmental leadership. Being landlocked does not exempt us from the responsibility of caring for our planet's oceans, which play an essential role in maintaining the Earth's ecological balance and provide half of the oxygen we breathe.
Statistics show that over 3 billion people depend on marine and coastal biodiversity for their livelihoods. Despite being far from the coast, the consequences of marine degradation can still reach Uganda through climatic changes, food insecurity, and economic instability.
Joining the High Seas Treaty aligns with Uganda's commitment to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 14, which aims to "conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources." Signing this treaty would establish Uganda as a key player in the global efforts to protect our shared natural resources and secure a sustainable future.
We urge the Ugandan government to take immediate and decisive action by signing and ratifying the High Seas Treaty. By doing so, Uganda will affirm its dedication to global environmental stewardship and contribute to a unified global effort to protect and conserve the world's oceans.
Please join this critical cause and sign this petition to urge Uganda's government to become a part of the High Seas Treaty, helping to promote a world where environmental sustainability is a priority for everyone. Your support is crucial in making our voices heard.
