Reduce commission to 10% to help Private Hire Car (PHC) drivers tide over crisis
The Issue
Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 and the good measures taken by our government in encouraging everyone to stays at home, demand for private hire car (PHC) has reduces tremendously and our PHC drivers are feeling the stress as their earnings are barely enough to pay off their car rental and fuel costs, leaving not much for their daily meals and provision for their families.
During peak hours, drivers are required to drives almost 35mins to an hour, from places to places whilst waiting for a job to be assigned to them.
During off peak hours, after completing a trip and alighting passenger at their destination, there will be an interval of a nearly 1-2hours cruising without a passenger.
Additional to the lesser jobs assigned, drivers are required to pay the PHC operators, a commission of 20% on all their completed jobs, which further reducing driver's earning and income.
PHC drivers are required to drives at least 12-14 hours with an hour break just to complete 16-18 jobs, an average total fare of $176 - $198. With the 20% commission, amount is reduced to $144 and after deducting car rental ($60), fuel costs ($40), daily meal ($10), their earning falls to around $34 (Pricing indicated are of minimum estimate).
We are urging for the understanding from both our Land Transport Authority (LTA) and our PHC operators to look into the current plight which our drivers are enduring and do consider reducing the current 20% commission to 10%, in order for our drivers to tide over.
Times is really tough now and your decision is going to make a great difference to our hardworking drivers, spending long hours on the road, navigating through traffic so everyone can get to our families safely.
