Playgrounds in our Communities/Estates

Playgrounds in our Communities/Estates
The Issue
Play is a right that ideally should be available to all populations. The way to provide this right in guidance of legal and policy framework both globally and locally is through providing playgrounds, playparks and playarea
Kenya population predominantly is youthful
With 0-4yrs 7,009,450
5-9yrs 6,966,447
Where are our 13 million children playing?
Low income areas; Children playing next to dumpsites, open sewers, roadsides, locked indoors
Middle income areas; Children playing in carparks, balconies, roadsides, narrow pathways between flats, locked in apartments
High income areas; Lawns, mini playgrounds
Play is a critical and intrinsic part of healthy human life and development and a child’s ability to exercise the right to play should not be dependent on the environmental conditions where that child lives or the family they were born into
WHAT ARE PLAYGROUNDS AND WHY
A playground, playpark, or play area is a place designed to provide an environment for children that facilitates play, typically outdoors. Building playgrounds is acknowledging the fact we have children and meeting their basic need that’s play, they wake up and play! HOW ELSE WOULD THEY UNDERSTAND THIS WORLD
Importance of playgrounds
Playgrounds have a positive impact on
1. Children’s sense of well-being
2. Fitness levels
3. Resilience
4. Cognitive functioning
5. Motor ability
6. Multisensory experience
7. Appreciate, understand and care for the environment
8. Developmentally appropriate for the age, giving the best alternative to drug abuse, excess screen time
9. Social interaction among peers, emotion regulations and sharing
10. Reducing the number of accidents, falling off apartments and motor accidents- playing on roads
