Oatberry's to be the cafe in 68-86 Clapham rd development.

The Issue

Oatberry's is predominately a free from food company coffee house. We believe that a local business should be given priority in the new development in Oval on 68-86 Clapham Rd.

The building company Melt in previous sites have just used their investment company Espalier investment to run their cafes.

We believe that by supporting a local business for the cafe, this will help encourage the Lambeth Council to give full planning permission for this redevelopment (reasons why we support this are below). Currently after preplanning the council stated that they don't want the aparthotel to be built.

We are predominately a free from food company, our professionally trained chef who is also a qualified nutritionist has designed a mix of healthy ingredients to create a colourful varied texture taste explosion, with a focus on the superfood Acai.

Reasons Oatberry's should be the cafe:

1. We should always support small local businesses, even more so after Covid19.

2. We have a brand but this also can be adapted, as we currently trade at festivals, farmers markets and non permanent spots in London.  The permanent spot would enable us to tailor our offering to satisfy the local market (residents and visitors to Oval) while continuing to stand for a focus on free from healthy tasty food.

3. The founder lived in Oval for 3 years before purchasing locally in 2007, and therefore has a good understanding of what local customers would want and what isn’t currently on offer. We have a strong proposition that isn't just another coffee shop. Our unique selling point is our Acai, healthy vibrant bowls and award winning artisan coffee. This is one of the reasons we were invited to the majority of major festivals including Wilderness that is renowned for having award winning food.

4. We have strong environmental values as a company and take great care in sourcing our suppliers. Organic, Fairtrade, Rainforest alliance, we wont use single use plastic. We offer discounts for bringing one’s own mug and bowl. We donate 10% of our profits to Mental health and animal welfare charities, we would be happy to change this to local causes.

5.  We have experience of trading at Oval due to the Farmers market, where our Acai bowl scored a 9/10, our Overnight oats 9/10 and our banana Acai bread received a 8/10 rating. Our coffee was mentioned as the best coffee at the Isle of Wight festival.

5. The brand aligns with business people and the younger generations, who are looking for a healthy energy providing meal. Hence it will attract the people staying in the property/hotel and those using it as a work space.

6. Acai was in the top 5 of uber eats searches in 2018, It is one of Meghan Markle's favourite Breakfasts/snacks! The Brazilian fruit is considered a super food as it has extremly high levels of antioxidents, fiber, Omega 3 (6,9) and flavonoids. Despite Its success in Brazil, USA and Australia it still can’t be purchased in main stream UK supermarkets. So we have a unique offering, that will therefore have a greater sphere of influence than most coffee houses.

7. We are small so we can adapt quickly.

8. The owner has a strong marketing background (studied this at Uni and worked in marketing). Who would like to run certain discounts on certain days/time of the day to entice the locals in. Ideas that I would like to trial:

An OAP time (encourage a talking couple of hours).

A games hour (i.e chess/backgammon).

A mothers hour.

During these times prices will be discounted. Therefore trying to be a hub for locals. Again this will be limited by the size of the cafe(unfortunately I haven't seen the specific plans yet).

9. If planning was agreed to have an alcohol license, we have close contacts with the previous head of Milk & Honey who would consult on offering and running a cocktail service. Therefore the use of the area would/could be multipurpose. In particular this would assist in decreasing the sprawl outside the pubs and tube stop on cricket match days.

We believe that the council should progress with the full development ( https://www.68-86claphamroad.co.uk/what-we-are-proposing ) as it will:

-Improve footfall and spend for local businesses.

-Aesthetically it will be an improvement to the area.

-Safety will be increased on Palfory place due to increased lighting and flow of people.

-Importantly this will decrease the fly tipping that takes place behind the Europcar.

-It will increase the services on offer for locals to use.

-The cost of property in Oval makes it hard for familes to have spare rooms and therefore hard for family members to visit and stay locally. This gives a cost friendly option.

Therefore with all the above we would appreciate your support for Oatberrys to be put into the development. Thank you for taking the time to listen to us.

If anyone has any questions we would be more than happy to answer these. Please contact James@oatberrys.com
