VPS must reach an agreement and settle a fair contract with support staff and educators
The Issue
As you may be aware, the Vancouver Association of ESP is the union that represents approximately 600 educators and support staff in Vancouver Public Schools. Our current collective bargaining agreement with VPS expires on August 31st, 2021. Our union bargaining team has been meeting regularly with the VPS bargaining team since May, and we have continued to meet throughout the summer in an effort to reach a fair settlement.
While we have reached agreement on some issues, the following issue, which represent the most pressing need for our members, remains unresolved. With just a few weeks until school resumes for staff and students, VAESP union members remain without a tentative agreement that guarantees Fair and Equitable Compensation that represents a livable wage in the Vancouver area. Vancouver Public Schools maintains substantial financial resources, and must use these funds to invest in their employees who work directly with VPS students.
Board President Kyle Sproul and the Board of Directors of Vancouver Public Schools have a responsibility to direct the district bargaining team to reach an agreement with VAESP. Students, Parents and Educators want to return to school this month with a focus on learning and support. The Vancouver school board must do their part to ensure that VAESP educators have a contract that provides the resources and support they need for a successful 2021 school year.
