The issue

DID YOU KNOW that Ku-ring-gai Municipal Council is about to cover Norman Griffiths Oval in West Pymble with synthetic turf!!

DID YOU KNOW that this oval is built on top of a major water catchment area that flows into Lane Cove River? There is a clear ENVIRONMENTAL RISK of plastic and chemical run-off into Quarry Creek and the Lane Cove River, creating a threat to the flora and fauna of the surrounding National Park.

DID YOU KNOW that the seeds and insects in these open grassland areas are a major FOOD SOURCE for local birdlife. This construction will further reduce open grassland and involve clearing of immediate flora surrounding the oval.

DID YOU KNOW that the artificial surface of this new oval will be up to 10 degrees hotter than the surrounding natural environment on hot summer days? There is a significant RISK OF INJURY for users of the oval due to synthetic hard-impact surface and increased heat amplification associated with plastic surfaces.

While we acknowledge that the Northern Districts Football Club deserves a dedicated space to continue to play and grow their sport, we reject that the Normal Griffiths Oval is the right place for a synthetic oval. The risks to other users and the environment is too great. The Oval should be shared for walking, other sports and recreation as well as a haven for flora and fauna which we all value.

THERE IS AN ALTERNATIVE. Upgrade the oval in a way that is harmonious with the surrounding environment and recognises the critical role of existing flora and fauna in preserving our precious natural ecosystems.

ASK KU-RING-GAI COUNCIL TO REVIEW ALL OPTIONS OTHER THAN SYNTHETIC TURF FOR UPGRADING THE NORMAN GRIFFITHS OVAL.
