Kroonstad Stop Proposed Mall in Recreational Site!
The Issue
Dear Town Resident
Developers from out of town want to destroy our only natural recreational park we have, called Kroonpark this is the only piece of ground we have which is run by Tourism and a proud piece of land for the Youth to enjoy and for generations to come.
There are strong allegations that these developers want to erect a shopping mall on this sight which we need to protect with saying this there are potential undeveloped sights in Kroonstad which are available and it would not harm our national recreation sight called Kroonpark which is a destination park for holiday makers. Kroonpark is an asset to Kroonstad if managed to its full potential.
This location which they want to erect a Mall has not got the right infrastructure to handle 86 shops, with a Taxi Rank and hawker’s market not even discussing SEWAGE which is a major problem and will have a significant impact on our day to day livelihood.
This proposed Mall development is in between two newly revamped shopping centre's and CBD which is about 1km away from one another , this means 3 areas will be affected. Is it fair on them as they have been supporting the municipality for all these years. IF the municipality so badly wants to build a Mall,why not do it next to the N1,Where plans have already been approved 10 years ago.
CBD will be totally destroyed. How are they going to pay the municipality Rates and taxes if their life line gets cut off. The CBD will became like many other towns and cities eg. Johannesburg , Germiston, Benoni, Alberton and many more . Kroonstad CBD is an important location connecting all suburbs you have to drive through it to get to the other side of town.
Kroonstad has lost about 847 residents with their families that were working at Voorspoed mine. This was a big knock to the economy of Kroonstad, Kroonstad is desperately in need of Industry.
The same Developers erected a Mall in the township servicing 80 000 people it is now 4 years later and many shops are closed, so how is a Mall in a small community which is double the size of the township Mall is going to survive. As years to come it will be a White Elephant in the middle of Kroonstad
