Respected all concerned authorities,   As a permanent resident of Kolkata, I want my city to be green, pollution free, beautiful and so do you.

However over the last two decades mindless hacking of all kinds of trees have taken  / are taking place all over Kolkata and her surroundings to create space for roads, flyovers , upcoming metro lines , stations, newly promoted buildings , smooth passage of durga pujo immersion trucks, visibility of new shops and so on . The list is long. And this is harming us , harming our kids and future generations and sadly - we citizens keep watching as each tree is felled, ruthlessly hacked.

With this petition we would like to bring to your notice that you have to take the responsibility of making Kolkata green again . And we want to make sure you take these initial three steps listed below to make this a reality !!

1) There should be an independent governing body reporting into the police department for protection of trees. This government body should consist of interested citizens and few law enforcing officers who will be able to take prompt action against felling of trees. This governing body should be widely publicized over social media and through campaigns so that every citizen of Kolkata is aware of such a body. Their performance to be published once every quarter in prominent newspapers.Ineffective officials to be show caused , shamed and changed.

2) The law against cutting trees should be well publicized and offenders prosecuted at a fast track court with exemplary punishments

3) There should be another independent body reporting to the mayor in charge of restoration of the green coverage . This should also comprise of interested citizens and few KMC officers and councillors to ensure plantation and care for trees. Their performance to be published once every quarter in prominent newspapers. Ineffective officials to be show caused , shamed and changed.

Further processes can be defined as these three points mature. Please remember

-Trees combat climate change
-Trees clean the air
-Trees provide oxygen
-Trees provide shade - cool the streets and the city
-Trees save water by slowing evaporation
-Trees help prevent water pollution
-Trees shield children from ultra-violet rays
-Trees provide food and trees heal ( must be aware of neem tree)
-Trees provide a canopy and habitat for birds and smaller animals
-Trees add unity

We will not stop signing till you realise this. Make this a real City of Joy
