Government of West Bengal

The Government of West Bengal, headquartered in the state capital Kolkata, is a democratically elected body that oversees and manages the operation and administration of various aspects of the state's social, economic and infrastructural development. It is governed by the Constitution of India and operates in tandem with the Central Government of India. Like other states, it adopts the parliamentary system of representative democracy, whereby power is vested with the Chief Minister, his or her council of ministers, and the state's bicameral legislature. The Governor, who is the constitutional head of the state, exercises powers very similar to those of the President of India. The local government bodies at the district and city levels aid the state government in the effective implementation of its policies.
