Coco’s story - Lisa Orfanidis (Coco's photo above)
One day I was out for breakfast, coming back I pulled up the driveway, and was greeted by a beautiful cat. She followed me to the front door, so I patted her and she fell asleep on my front deck. A little later I went outside to mow the lawn, and tidy up the yard, and noticed the cat was still asleep on my porch. She woke up and followed me around the front yard, and backyard, for four hours. Everywhere I went, the cat followed. It got late in the day, getting dark, and I wasn’t sure what to do with this cat that was hanging around. We decided to let her in the house, as she was in no hurry to go, and we decided that tomorrow we would drop her off at the vet.
The next morning my daughter took a photo of the cat and put it on social media, saying how sad she was to have to say good bye to our new cat friend. My daughter and I put her in a pet-box, and walked her up to the vet. The vet informed us that the owner was found, so we were happy that she was going back to her family.
Then my daughter’s friend saw the photo on social media and said to her mother ‘That looks exactly like Gran’s cat’. Her grandmother turned out to be our neighbour across the road, and the cat’s name was Coco. The grandmother had recently passed away from cancer. Poor Coco was lonely, missing her every day. The husband was out a lot, leaving Coco on her own in the cold house, as the husband never put the heater on.
My daughter and her friend had a catch-up, and her friend confided that Coco was bereft since losing her grandmother, and they were not too sure what to do, as her grandfather was unable to keep her. Maybe in a month they would drop her off to a pet rescue.
When my daughter and her friend arrived home, as soon as I saw them I asked 'Where is my cat?' They both laughed and said 'Well this is easier than we thought.' They thought I would say no to having a cat. They ran out the door and ten minutes later returned with our cat Coco.
Coco is much loved by us and loves hiding behind the curtain with the heater on. She follows me around the garden as I work. She keeps our dog company, and is part of our family. We are so lucky that Coco found us, and we want to keep her enjoying her days in the sun.
