Know Your Rights Bill

Know Your Rights Bill
The Issue
We are the California Know Your Rights team, also known as the Cali KYR Team. We are a group of delegates from the YMCA’s Youth and Government Program and have delegates contributing throughout all of California. Based originally in the Pittsburg, CA delegation, delegates designed a bill to take to the Youth and Government (Y&G) conference in Sacramento which would make it mandatory for students to be taught the rights US Citizens, immigrants, and criminals. Students are already required to be taught the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights, and we are hoping to build off these prior establishments and reinforce them. We hope to expand, not override. Delegates met with important groups such as the school district board in the area, non-profits, and the county supervisor, talked with AP History teachers, government teachers, and many more. Through all of this the bill gained a lot of support, and we the delegates have been inspired to bring it to life in the real world. With delegates in both Northern California and Southern California, as well as student representatives from Youth City Councils and Commissions, the ultimate goal is to spread and pass the bill throughout the entire state. We are starting a petition to gain support, traction, and attention.
We have a Instagram page for updates and advertising, as well as a fun place for teens and adults alike to connect and learn about their rights.
