Know Your Clothes - help garment tags reflect the reality of our clothes

The Issue

we want the garment tag on our clothes and other textiles to reflect not just the fiber content, but also the dyes, mordants, wetting agents, functional chemicals, polyester thread, elastic, and all sorts of other details that are currently not shared with us from the textile manufacturers’ side.

Legislation and restricting some of the most harmful chemicals in clothing is also important, and work we support fully. But we do believe our work would both be strengthened by working towards more information for us the consumer, alongside restriction and industrial substitution.

If we don’t know what’s in our clothes, it is easier for textile companies to make unfortunate substitutions that may not be in our or the planet’s best interest. Educating and providing access to the necessary information is not just good for people with allergies and sensitivities so that they can make more informed choices, it also allows for a more transparent world where we have more control over what sorts of items we buy and don’t want to buy.
