Kitchener Urban Chickens
11 Jul 2015
Only a couple of blocks away from Heidi’s house, Kitchener teacher Pat Rittinger runs an amazing program at KCI, which is dedicated to ecological awareness, environmental sustainability and an understanding of where our food comes from. As part of the program, the students care for a variety of animals (including hens) and are responsible for everything from collecting eggs to cleaning out the pens! Originally a program that was geared towards students who would benefit from going directly into the workforce, there was so much interest that the program was opened to all students! As of 2014, they had about 120 students enrolled in the program. This program even received funding from the city to help build the facilities! So needless to say there is a definite interest in urban hens in our city!
