On June 29th, a friend was contacted by the SPCA and told she had two weeks to get rid of her hens. Apparently they smell and make too much noise. It’s not like she hid them. Their coop borders on the Mount Hope Cemetery. Over the last six years, thousands of people have seen them – everyone from members of the community, to those working in the cemetery, to those visiting the city for funerals. Parents brought their children by to visit – to watch the hens grow and learn about where their food came from. Neighbours asked in concern if they didn’t see a specific chicken for a couple of days (she was “sitting” on her eggs). Grounds workers came by to chat. What is wrong with this picture? Why is something that helps to build community and teaches our children about where are foot comes from illegal?
