Improve pedestrian crossing and safety on Penrhyn Road

Improve pedestrian crossing and safety on Penrhyn Road
The Issue
On multiple occasions, including a few myself, I have seen near accidents on Penrhyn Road, specifically just outside Kingston University Campus.
Penrhyn Road is an extremely busy and long road with inadequate safety features on the road to prevent drivers from speeding. In addition, there are a number of bus stops across Penrhyn Road but two rather distant traffic lights that are arguably misplaced. Students have to cross the road putting their safety and driver’s safety at risk. For those who are unfamiliar with the area and not well versed in the norms of Kingston University students crossing, they may be driving at higher speeds and could result in a serious collision.
A serious collision like the one that occurred on the 31st March 2015 involving the tragic death of Kingston University Student, Hina Shamim. This was as a result of insufficient pedestrian crossing which has real human consequences and it could have been any one of Kingston University’s thousands of students who were killed.
We call on the Royal Borough of Kingston Upon Thames to take the following proposals into consideration with the greatest urgency:
- Zebra Crossing (placed close to the bus stop outside the Penrhyn Road Campus)
- Speed Camera (placed strategically to cause drivers to be travelling at the lowest speeds closest to the University)
- Speed Bumps (proven to reduce the speed of a travelling vehicle)
A special thanks to Kingston ISOC Society for their support in this matter.
Regards,
Student
