Recently, many (20+ so far) teen girls from Kingston, Ontario have been coming forward with their stories of sexual assault via social media. The common theme that we’re seeing from these stories is that Kingston residents who report sexual violence incidences haven’t been taken seriously by Kingston Police. Whether by lack of thorough investigation or lack of investigation at all beyond the initial report. Some even say they were turned away and not believed at all.

This uprising of allegations spread on social media creates many issues, for both the victims, and the accused. There is a reason sexual assault/rape reports are handled by police. The laws are meant to protect everyone involved. But by Kingston Police not completing thorough investigations for these crimes, it leaves many victims to turn to other means for justice and recognition for their abuse.

This is not ideal because it leaves both the victims, and any of the accused who may be truly innocent, vulnerable.

This situation is and always should have been the responsibility of the KPD. The KPD has let our community down and must be pressured to make procedural changes to protect our community from this injustice in the future.
