King's College Cambridge propose to demolish Croft Gardens (above) and replace these buildings with a dense, massive development of large brick blocks.

Croft Gardens and its topiary are much-loved features of the Barton Road approach to the historic city of Cambridge.  Their green-tile roofs and attractive layout provide variety and interest and some visual breathing-space. Of modest proportions set back from the road, the buildings of Croft Gardens blend well in the streetscape of Barton Road. The topiary provides a quirky, interesting green element and has been maintained, despite the fact that the buildings themselves have not been kept in good repair.

Croft Gardens was designed by the Art-Deco architect D. C. Wadhwa, who also designed Maitland House further down the street, which provides a visual reference and link. 

Current: Low-density, 1930s development of three buildings with c. 36 occupants

English Heritage have said in the past: 'This site contains a group of two-storey flats built in the interwar period. While the flats have lost their original windows, they continue to make a very positive contribution to the character and appearance of the conservation area. Demolition of these flats would result in harm...'

With your support we may be able to convince King's College to think again about this project and come forward with a more imaginative solution that would retain Croft Gardens and still allow for a reasonable development of the site.
