Your incredible response and surge of feeling for saving public access to the Meadows has had a powerful effect. We hit 10,000 supporters in two days and the petition caught the attention of the nationals, with articles in the Saturday Telegraph, Times and the Guardian.
And yesterday, King’s college issued a statement via twitter to say that they had read through the many thousands of comments left in the petition and related social media posts and they ‘recognise that the restrictions added to the signage would adversely and unfairly affect the many conscientious users of the river.’
They have not yet said what they plan to do and have not committed to any reversal of their decision, therefore the petition will continue to run for now. Local councillors have been in touch with us and we are working towards having supporters of this petition represented in the next stretch of discussions for re-establishing access.
As petition organisers we have loved hearing everyone’s stories about the Meadows. We’ve also loved knowing that teachers have been talking to their pupils about it as an example of effective peaceful protest and seeing that this movement has drawn people from everywhere- former and current residents, university fellows and townies, old and young, demonstrating that united we stand, divided we fall.
Thank you all for your amazing support, we are numbering over 15,000 today. Keep signing and sharing until we get the change we want.
With love Camila, Clare, Emilie, Lucie, Lotus and Sarah
