We demand that Kimberly High School create changes to be inclusive for BIPOC students.

Kimberly High School needs a change.

According to Niche, Kimberly High School is currently listed as the “#1 High School in the Appleton Area”. However, the district fails to represent, acknowledge and partake in creating an inclusive environment for BIPOC students (BIPOC is the acronym for Black, Indeginous and People of Color).

With the Black Lives Matter movement occurring, we felt that it was necessary to continue further the movement first by acknowledging problems that stem close to home. Throughout our entire four years at KHS, the closest thing that we encountered to changes being made was the “It Ends Now” project that was introduced after the N word was written on a desk. After the problem was addressed with only one pep rally, the educational institution never changed to become more inclusive for their BIPOC students.

  1. Martin Luther King JR. Day was NEVER honored, even though the entire Appleton Area School District constantly recognizes this Holiday every year.
  2. Race Creations, a class that emphasized on occurring racial injustices and systemic racism is offered only ONCE EVERY OTHER YEAR.
  3. The Social Studies and History department  never included crucial historical events involving race.
  4. All books in the English department that students were required to read are written by white authors, and white authors only.
  5. Before we graduated, our first and only black staff member was hired.
  6. Bigotry, stereotypical, racial biases and racial comments continued to be made and were NEVER addressed

There are many more injustices that could be added to this list.

The demands and changes we came up with aren’t just limited to our own personal experiences. These changes and demands are made to focus around all Black, Indeginous, and Students of Color.

We, as BIPOC students and allies, ARE TIRED from carrying on the burden of educating and calling out actions of our peers. We ARE TIRED of the degrading educational environment.

It is only right that all students be protected from these situations from the school board.

We demand that the Kimberly Area School District follows through with these demands towards creating a safe and inclusive educational environment for THEIR own students of color. As stated in the Student and Parent Handbook, “the board of education is committed to providing a safe, positive, productive, and nurturing educational environment for all of its students” (page 24). We demand that KHS prove their commitment.
