Kijiji won’t change. Kijiji might throw us a bone here and there by charging $4.99 per dog ad or by removing their “free to a good home” listings. But the fact remains that as long as Kijiji knows that animals with health problems (perhaps because of the conditions under which they are raised and bred) are being sold on their site, and as long as they know that users are being cheated by unethical animal breeders on their site, Kijiji should not be selling animals. If Kijiji really cared about animal welfare and were responsible enough to protect their users, Kijiji would stop selling animals for profits and instead help thousands of friendly and healthy pets waiting in shelters and in registered rescue groups across Canada to get adopted. Kijiji would also help individual families carefully rehome their pets for a small adoption fee to ensure their future well-being. Kijiji won’t change. It’s we who have to change ourselves. We have to learn how to avoid supporting the cruel puppy mill industry when looking for a new pet. Individual families have to know how to carefully rehome their pets. Shelters, animal rescue groups and veterinary clinics have to provide online courtesy listings for these families (think foster families) in exchange for a small adoption fee. We have to look beyond Kijiji when looking for a pet. Because even unethical breeders can disguise themselves as animal shelters on Kijiji to avoid paying the $4.99 charge. Because unscrupulous Kijiji users who are banned by Kijiji find ways around the ban by using fake names, different computers, and getting others to post pets for sale ads on their behalf. Because Kijiji has no control over the content of its site. We have to know that Petfinder - not Kijiji - is the only trusted source of pets for the online environment. Because Petfinder allows only shelters, animal rescue groups and veterinary clinics to register on their site. We have to look here first: http://barbara-lapointe.tumblr.com/
