Ban influencers spreading misinformation about food and nutrition on social media

The Issue

I have witnessed firsthand the devastating effects that an eating disorder can have upon someone and those around them. A huge reason for the development of such illnesses have been accredited to social media and the glorification of model-like figures. Today, an increasing number of influencers on instagram are posting misinformation about food, dieting and nutrition on social media. The vast majority of these people do not have any nutritional qualifications and are thus spreading facts that are untrue and dangerous to those who are vulnerable to eating disorders. Eating disorders such as anorexia have increased dramatically with the rise of platforms such as Instagram, where users are posting misleading facts about food and dietary supplements. Hospital admissions have recorded a 7% annual rise of hospital admissions for those with eating disorders, with 2019 marking the highest number of admissions for 8 years. These are worrying facts that need to be addressed.

My goal is to create a law that forbids influencers to post information about food, weight loss and other related topics that feed into the anxieties of so many vulnerable children, women and men all over the world. Please help me get this petition to those that have the power to make this change.
