

Johor’s Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar on 18th September urged the government to abort its plans to appeal the recent High Court decision allowing citizenship rights to children born overseas, regardless of whether the Malaysian parent is the father or mother. On 16th September, a group of 13 MPs from both the government and opposition banded together to seek Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s intervention over a move to appeal the High Court ruling that struck out discriminatory treatment of Malaysian mothers with overseas-born children. YB Rina Harun, the Minister of Women, Family and Community Development also reiterated her commitment towards championing the voices of Malaysian women, especially in their citizenship rights. She said this in an Instagram post following a meeting she had with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, YB Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah and Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities, YB Datuk Hajah Zuraida Kamaruddin.
