NOT ON MY WATCH! STOP THE KILLING OF OUR WOMEN AND GIRLS

NOT ON MY WATCH! STOP THE KILLING OF OUR WOMEN AND GIRLS
The Issue
We, the undersigned individuals and Organizations working on the protection of Women and girls in Kenya;
Angered by the numerous cases of femicide reported lately in the media including the rape and murder of 24-year Velvine Chelungui and Celestine Nduku,a mother of two who was killed by her ex-husband;
Aware that so many other cases of femicide are happening across the country and unreported;
Cognizant that the Constitution of Kenya accords everyone the right not to be subjected to any form of violence from both public and private spheres (Article 29 (c) , thereby making it a crime to commit any form of violence against women and girls including rape, murder, physical and emotional abuse;
Concerned by the government’s inaction, backlog and slow turn around in investigation, prosecution, conviction and remedying of these cases; and
Recalling the promises made by the Ministry of Interior and Security and the Ministry of Gender in May 2019 during the Femicide Victims Vigil to ensure speedy prosecution, financial allocations and declaration of violence as a national disaster;
Demand that the directorate of criminal investigations moves with speed to prosecute the killers of Velvine and Celestine;
Call on ALL our leaders especially women representatives in Kenya to come together and strongly condemn the recent cases of femicide as well as demand persecution of the perpetrators;
Call on the government of Kenya to fully implement all laws on the rights of women and girls including the constitution of Kenya, Maputo Protocol, CEDAW and ensure prosecution of all perpetrators of violence against women;
Urge religious leaders to use their platform and following to show support for a Kenya where women and girls can fully enjoy their freedom and rights without fear;
Call on the media to continue bringing to light the many cases of femicide and all forms of violence against women and girls while being careful not to place the blame on the victims;
Call on all Kenyan men to become allies and defend women and girls against all forms of violence both online and offline;
Call on Kenyan Women and Girls to come together and continue to demand accountability from government in regards to securing the rights and freedoms of women and girls.
