Dr. Mac tweeted today about 8 new org's that adopted internet tech in 1981. How progressive they must have been. But is that really the case? Dr. Mac's admiration is a classic example of the Survivorship Bias. Sure those 8 are made out to look like prescient adopters of the bleeding edge. Is that really the case though?
Not if you remember HD-DVD, Laser Discs, Os/2, Beta or other technologies that died a relatively undignified death at the hand of progress.
There's no doubt that e-readers are a field that is undergoing great growth. However, we're at the ground level of this technology, maybe the middle floor (Franklin E-readers were ground-level). We're far from the top.
If Dr. Mac wants to experiment with technology, all the more power to him. That's admirable. If he feels like spending the hard earned money of students to experiment, that's where I, and many others object.
