Alec Ullman started this petition to Kennett Area Board and

In the Kennett Square area, there is a bounty of recreational activities from parks, to pools, to various courts and fields for sports and other activities of the sort. Yet there are a couple of areas in the recreational field that aren't necessarily covered in the preexisting projects. The main goal of this petition is to get support for a local skatepark for activities such as skateboarding, scootering, rollerblading, and BMX. As the population within Kennett expands the number of kids and teenagers will also increase and various kids will pursue various activities and fields each with their independent benefits. Although kids skateboard(All associated fields included) for various reasons, Kennett Square seems to box them all in, and although the citizens of the area are not obliged to treat them all with respect, that will lead to friction and a feeling of being unwelcome within Kennett. So what will those kids do? Some will stop skating. Some will skate in the streets. Some will skate in any parking lot they can find. Those who stopped skating may have feelings of resentment, or hopelessness, not to mention the loss of character that could have come from skateboarding. Those who skate in the streets will most likely feel this same resentment towards the local government or the town in general. These kids are also at a higher risk of injury from external factors such as cars, cracks, and are more likely to interfere with the life of other citizens. And those who skate in parking lots will always be on someone's private property and putting themselves into situations with other people and their property that are far from ideal. Regardless of how someone will end up, it's going to be more negative to the individual and others as opposed to having a designated skatepark. Skateboarding isn't for everyone but those who get into it have a tendency of being outcasts, weirdos, loners, whatever the case may be, they ended up skating and it's probably because they didn't fit in everywhere else. Although that is far from a fact, it is often the case, and if someone can't skate there are little to no healthy, safe, community/culture-oriented activities that they will otherwise fit into. One may question if there is truly a genuine culture and community in skateboarding why they themselves have not seen it, or why those in the Kennett area don't go somewhere else. The answers vary but to keep it brief skating is a solo sport that can be done in a driveway (although obviously not everyone has one or at least one that is suitable)or a private parking lot and most skateboarders don't know each since only a few people out of a large group may skate and even those people may not necessarily get along. Skateboarding is also something that can be easily interrupted by people, cars, and things of the sort so most skaters choose to solve that issue by avoiding that, to begin with. In addition, the closest skateparks to Kennett are 30 minutes away by car in West Chester, Wilmington, and 40 minutes in Glasgow and Newark. These distances can be quite difficult to get to without a car. Those who skateboard, and there may be more of them than one may think, in Kennett Square are attempting to push for a skatepark so all we ask is that you support the idea in board meetings or wherever you can so that we can create a refuge for the youth of tomorrow.
