I know all too well the struggles of children in the foster care system. I've personally experienced the injustice: I was a foster child, shuffled among 24 homes within 4 years. Only one of those homes showed me love, while the others subjected me to terrible abuse. When I dared to report it, my pleas were ignored as the foster parents responsible for my suffering received payment. To add salt to the wound, I was labeled as a “high-risk” individual simply because I was strong enough to speak up just like anyone else who was brave enough to have a voice. Children like Kei’Mani Latigue, myself, and countless others are the unseen victims of a system intended to protect us.

This is a system that, tragically, has repeatedly proven its inefficiency. We cannot allow children like Kei’Mani Latigue, whose life was tragically cut short, to suffer anymore. She should not have been subjected to such painful negligence by those who should have protected her. No more children should be!

We are calling for a comprehensive reform of the children's services system in Toledo and beyond. Our mission is to ensure it is rebuilt, restaffed, and retrained to sincerely maintain the welfare of the children under its care. The focus should be to protect the vulnerable from harm, and not chase shadows. Let’s stop wasting our valuable time and resources investigating claims that have no ground, and let’s investigate and intervene on the situations that truly require it. Let’s stop ignoring the blatant cries for help!

Let us create an environment where children are loved, respected, and protected. Let Kei’Mani Latigue's unfortunate demise inspire us to ensure no more children are victims of institutional negligence.
