Keep Zipcar operating in the UK

The Issue

Owning a car is simply impractical for many Londoners due to the high costs of buying, maintaining, insuring, and parking a vehicle in the city. Zipcar has been a good solution—offering the convenience of a car when needed, without the financial burden and stress of ownership. With its widespread availability across London, it allows seamless journeys that combine car access with public transport. For me, it has been a reliable partner for grocery runs, weekend trips, and late-night emergencies—providing flexibility in a city where personal mobility is often a challenge.

However, I recently learned that Zipcar plans to cease its UK operations by the end of the year, leaving countless users in a difficult position. Zipcar is far more than a personal convenience—it supports thousands of Londoners who depend on car-sharing to manage essential travel without contributing to congestion and pollution. If the service disappears, many people may have no choice but to purchase personal vehicles, increasing financial strain on households while worsening traffic and carbon emissions. This would undermine our city’s climate and environmental goals.

In a city as environmentally conscious as London, losing the only large, city-wide car-sharing service would be a major step backward. We are calling on the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, and the Transport Secretary, Heidi Alexander, to intervene by bringing Zipcar into public ownership. Doing so would secure the continuation of this vital service and support London’s commitment to reducing private car use and promoting greener alternatives.

The closure of Zipcar would disrupt daily life for thousands and weaken the progress we’ve made in sustainable transport. Public ownership would not only preserve an essential service, but also ensure it remains affordable and accessible for everyone.

Help us protect this crucial part of London’s transport ecosystem. By adding your name to our petition, you can help keep Zipcar on the road, safeguard our environment, and maintain access to flexible mobility for all. Together, we can urge city leaders to act decisively. Sign today to ensure London remains a leader in smart, sustainable urban transport.
